Ivan
Jadan (Zhadan)
Great
Russian Tenor of the 20th Century
Premier
Lyric Tenor-Bolshoi Theater 1928-1941
The
Ivan Jadan Museum on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands offers cross-cultural
views of the 94 year long life of the man now judged to be the great
Russian tenor of the 20th century. He was the first major artist
dissident to escape Stalin's terror in 1941, and reach the U.S.
eight years later. But Soviet attempts to destroy Jadan continued.
He survived an assassination attempt while in New York City in 1949.
The museum today houses a growing collection of more than 5000
fascinating artifacts, including a unique collection of videos,
books and CD's in Russian and English for serious research, historic
documents and photos. Living history programs with museum adventures
are offered for elementary students. Informal seminars are
held with students and faculty from the University of the Virgin
Islands and Middlebury College of Vermont.
